Model TKO-6 Separator Solves Difficult Tramp Oil Problem On Key Machine Tool At Precision Job Shop
|

Keller TKO separators are the only compact, economical separators available that has a 1/2-inch pump. With a 14 x 14 footprint, Model TKO can fit into tight quarters adjacent to the sump. To operate, simply attach a 1/4-inch shop compressed air line.Pictured above: Model TKO-6 |
The patented permanent oil separator element efficiently splits tramp oil even from a slow separating coolant. The oil layer collected on the top of the separation tank is periodically drained into a waste oil container by opening the oil drain valve briefly. |
The floating inlet device pulls oily coolant from the sump segment in the foreground, while the recycle line and clean coolant discharge into the far segment at high flow rate, forcing the tramp oil toward the inlet device. |
This quantity of aluminum chips was captured in the permanent inlet screen over a two week period. Even though the inlet screen was three-quarters full with solids, the flow rate through the system was unchanged.

Debco Machine,
Inc. (Natick, MA), a job shop specializing in precision components,
had a particularly demanding requirement for tramp oil removal
from the sump of a CNC machining center which is in almost constant
use. About one gallon per day of tramp oil enters the 100 gallon
coolant sump of this machine. Dan Collari, owner and shop manager,
knew that the presence of a large quantity of tramp oil in the
coolant was adversely affecting machine throughput, tool life,
and parts finish. Because of the importance of this machine to
his shop, Dan Collaris objective was to solve the tramp
oil problem with a dedicated separator, rather than a portable
unit which would treat all the machines in his shop in sequence.
An additional objective was that the separator should require
little or no attention from the machine operator.
Dan was most
interested to hear that these conditions might be satisfied by
a compact pump/separator unit, Model TKO-6, one of a family of
separators for individual sumps newly introduced by Keller Products,
Inc. (Lexington, MA). Dan was quite familiar with Keller separators,
having used four Keller units successfully on other machines in
the shop for several years. The new Model TKO-6 separator has
several features which recommended it for this application, particularly
the fact that it is equipped with a 1/2-inch compressed air operated
diaphragm pump, the same pump which is used on all the larger
Keller separators in thousands of installations. The Keller TKO
separators are the only compact, economical separators to be equipped
with a 1/2-inch pump, which is far superior in reliability and
performance to the 1/4-inch diaphragm pumps or electric pumps
used on small separators from other manufacturers. With the 1/2-inch
pump, the Model TKO-6 can readily deal with the large volume of
tramp oil in this sump. The high flow rate aerates the coolant
and creates vigorous circulation which forces oily coolant to
the inlet device from all areas of the sump. The flow rate through
the oil separation section can be modulated to obtain a clean
split of tramp oil from a slow-rejecting coolant without affecting
the overall coolant recirculation rate. The footprint of a Model
TKO is only 14 x 14, an important consideration to
Dan Collari because of the tight floorspace in his shop. Another
important consideration to Dan is that the Model TKO-6 is priced
at only $595.00.
The Model
TKO separator has other advantages common to all Keller tramp
oil separatorsan efficient filter on the inlet side
of the pump to protect the pump from damage by chips and other
solid particles, and a permanent plastic oil separation element
patented by Keller, which does not require cleaning or replacement.
Startup of a Model TKO or any other Keller separator is easythe
customer clamps the inlet device to the side of the sump, connects
the inlet device to the filter inlet using the hose provided,
and attaches a 1/4 shop compressed air line to the filter/regulator
provided.
Dan is very happy
with the performance of the Model TKO-6 in this demanding application.
In addition to making a clean separation of the large volume of
tramp oil, the Model TKO-6 meets Dans other objective of requiring
little or no attention from the machine operator. The collected
tramp oil is drained from the separation tank by opening the oil
drain valve briefly, usually once per day, and the prefilter screen
is cleaned once every two weeks, about a five minute task. Dan Collaris
verdict on the new Model TKO-6? Just what his key machine tool needed!
